How to Help
From time to time, readers have felt compelled to do something or give something on behalf of those who have put their lives forward in the hope that some greater understanding might come from having their stories told. Below are two specific means by which to contribute to those actually doing the good work that I only write about.
Door of Hope
Door of Hope is a Christian non-profit serving Los Angeles County. Door of Hope is one of the only homeless providers in the region that can shelter any kind of family together in their own private unit, including single moms, single dads, and two-parent families together with their children. The network of longterm transitional housing shelters are well-accommodated and close to both schools, transit hubs, and job markets. This organization enables families such as Evelyn’s, who as described in SEEKING SHELTER have suffered unimaginable stress and uncertainty, to know stability and compassion in their lives.
The Robert Peace Scholarship Fund
In keeping with the wishes of Jacqueline Peace, Robert’s mother, The Robert Peace Scholarship has been established at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, NJ. To make a donation, click here and write “In memory of Robert Peace” in the comments box.
Exalt Youth
Contact with the criminal justice system can be ruinous to the potential futures of young people. Exalt Youth accepts teenagers at this most vital and vulnerable juncture of their lives and inspires them to believe in their own worth and create lasting behavioral change. Through structured classes, individual support, paid internship placement, and a strong alumni network, Exalt illuminates a future to kids for whom survival can feel aspirational.
